Butter alternative: what to use for facilitated sessions
Butter, a tool for facilitated online sessions, was acquired by Miro in March 2025, and one of its founders has since posted that it is being sunset. A replacement should cover what your sessions rely on: an agenda, timers, polls or voting, built-in video and facilitator controls. AppSprint covers those for one kind of session, the guided product sprint that ends in a working prototype. It is not a general meeting or training tool, so other session types need a different choice.
What happened to Butter
According to an announcement from the law firm Goodwin, Miro acquired Butter in March 2025. A later LinkedIn post by a Butter founder is titled "We're sunsetting Butter". Both are linked in the sources below. If you still have content in Butter, check the company's own messages for dates and export options. We have not verified those details and will not guess at them.
What to look for in a replacement
Start from the sessions you actually run, not from a feature list. Write down your last three sessions and what the tool did for you in each. A typical checklist looks like this.
- An agenda people can see. Steps in order, so the group knows where it is and what comes next
- Timers. Visible to everyone, controlled by the facilitator
- Polls and voting. Ideally anonymous, with results hidden until you reveal them
- Built-in video. So nobody has to juggle a meeting link and a separate workspace
- Facilitator controls. One person moves the room forward, and co-facilitators can help
- Easy joining. Guests get in from a link without creating an account
- Room size. Check how many people can be on camera at once before you commit

- You cannot design your own agenda. The steps are fixed by the template
- Calls work best with about four cameras on, so it does not suit large cohorts or all-hands sessions
- Only a text transcript is stored. There is no audio or video recording
- It has no integrations, including no calendar sync
Other kinds of tools to consider
For sessions that are not product sprints, look at other categories. Online whiteboards give you an open canvas and leave the agenda to the facilitator.
